Highly resilient biocontrol agents based on desert microalgae

Soilborne pathogens cause severe diseases in many crops worldwide, which results in significant economic losses. Thus, extensive research has focused on developing sustainable solutions such as biocontrol agents. Nevertheless, the complex interaction of these agents with their biotic and abiotic environment challenges the development of novel effective agents, a critical but unmet need.
Our goal is to solve this problem by identifying highly resilient desert microalgae that possess impressive antimicrobial activity for use as biocontrol agents and examining their biocontrol activity under realistic outdoor conditions in order to improve implementation success rates.

Environmental conditions effect on plant disease outbreak

Soilborne pathogens cause severe diseases in many crops. In the absence of a suitable host, they produce resting structures, which are extremely resistant to environmental stresses. The close connection of the resting structures with the soil strongly influences their survival and ability to cause disease. Nevertheless, very little is known about the mechanisms whereby resting structures of soilborne pathogens survive in the soil. A better understanding of the complex interactions between these structures and the environment is essential for developing efficient, environmentally friendly platforms for soilborne pathogen control.
